Jazz enthusiasts who arrived in good numbers to catch the Dutch quartet, The Buzz Bros, had their feet tapping from start to finish on Saturday night. The event held at The Taj Club House on Anna Salai saw many a plush round table seated with guests sipping on wine or a fancy cocktail, and taking in the music by the soft glow of chandeliers up ahead. Started in 2001 by guitarist and composer Marnix Busstra and his brother, pianist Berthil (hence the band's distinct name), The Buzz Bros Band is a popular name all over Europe. Completing the group are drummer Chris Strik and bassist Frans Van Geest. With compositions that were completely instrumental, a blend of electric acoustic funky jazz with an ethnic touch --- these musicians, although not easily understood with their thick accents, certainly knew how to keep the audience hooked. Particularly enjoyable was a catchy composition called simply, 'The Buzz Battle'. This was followed by a more alluring tune of sorts, perhaps the ideal tune for that clinching kiss in a romantic movie, with the fitting title, 'Make me a Rainbow'. Helping them keep their promise of an ethnic influence was 'Kannada', a soulful rendition of guitar in the foreground with a carnatic twist. This piece was rewarded by applause and had one member of the audience comment that it may have been inspired by Jaya Krishna Mukunda Murari, a classic from the 1957 Telugu film, Panduranga Mahatyam! As the tunes seemed to free-flow, one knows that one has been having a good time when the performances remain endearing long after the titles have been forgotten. By the end of the evening, there was still room for another. Encore!
