TUMKUR: Tumkur University, which pays its vice-chancellor a salary of Rs 2.5 lakh, which is higher than that of the President of India, also spends Rs 25,000 a month on his bungalow though he doesn’t live there.Vice-chancellor Dr S C Sharma, who lives in Bangalore and commutes to and from Tumkur daily, is said to have spent just a couple of nights at the bungalow at Sira Gate, three km from the university, in the last two years. The university spends Rs 12,500 on rent, Rs 10,000 on security and the rest for gardening, house-keeping and power bills. The blank visitors’ book too speaks for the empty house. “One gets an impression it’s an abandoned house,” said Pushpalatha, a resident in the area.Sharma’s predecessor Dr O Anantharamaiah lived in the building till May 2009 with his family and used to commute from there to his office. Even though Sharma lives at his Gandhinagar residence in Bangalore with his wife Ahalya Sharma, who works as a professor at the Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Bangalore, he has not given up his Tumkur bungalow. When contacted, the vice-chancellor curtly told Express over phone it was nobody’s business where he stayed. “I can choose to stay in New Delhi, Bangalore or wherever I wish,” he snapped. However, he claimed that he had stayed at the bungalow on Monday night.
