New Delhi: Having bagged three prestigious awards for his film 'Chotushkone', director Srijit Mukherji said the film was difficult to make but he is quite proud of it.
"I knew the film was sent to the jury but the news of winning the Best Director award came out of the blue," said Mukherji in an exclusive chat to IBNLive.com
The director's phone hasn't stopped ringing ever since the news broke out on Tuesday evening. And the happy filmmaker isn't complaining. Featuring Bengali cinema's stalwarts like Aparna Sen, Chiranjeet and Gautam Ghose along with Parambrata Chatterjee and host of other actors- Mukherji's film 'Chotushkone' was "thriller disguised in an anthology."
"It is one of my well crafted films. By the looks of it, the film was an anthology but later the viewer found out how it was a thriller disguised in that format. There was so much happening in the film- so many stories. So it was difficult to shoot the film." Mukherji, who also won for Best Screenplay for the film, added "I am quite proud of the film. It was very interesting to write such a story and it possibly hasn't been done before. It had a non linear narration which is difficult to write and shoot. I am especially happy that the screenplay got its due recognition," said the director whose film 'Jatishwar' had lapped up all music awards at last year's National Film Awards.
Mukherji is also happy that his film was not only appreciated by the critics but also managed to make money at the Box Office. "'Chotushkone' was the first hit of 2014 in Tollywood. It completed 100 days recently and was viewed and loved by people across the country."
The award winning director is also happy that Bengali cinema is getting its due recognition in the national arena these past years. "We all are trying new things here in Bengal. The renaissance has come about because of directors like Kaushik Ganguly, Q, Aparna Sen and some incredible new talents like Churni Ganguly, Aditya Sengupta and Anindo Chatterjee. These are new voices- willing to experiment and tell new things to the audience which people are accepting. It is a great time for Bengali cinema."
Reacting to the new diktats that have been issued by the Censor board, Mukherji hoped that the system would change for the better soon. "It is very difficult to make films with so many guidelines. I hope good sense will prevail and ratings system will change. Films should be rated according to age, and not completely banned. That's not the way to go forward," said the director.
Mukherji's next film is 'Nirbaak' which marks the Bengali debut of Sushmita Sen. He is also working on epic saga called 'Rajkahini' which has a mammoth star cast of 11 heroines and 9 heroes and set in the backdrop of partition.
