New Delhi: She caught the eyes of the industry with a serious venture ‘Khamosh Paani’. She got the attention of the industry with her acting skills in ‘Chak De! India’ and she got acclaim for her performance in off beat ‘BA Pass’. Actress Shilpa Shukla now needs no introduction in Bollywood, critics take her name with Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi and audience love the intense performance of this beauty. The actress started her career as a theatre actor and is still an active stage artist. According to her, “Exposure from theater helps one a lot to find his/her ground in the industry. It helps one to find the real self which is a very important to survive in show-biz."
Talking about the segregation of Indian film industry into ‘parallel’ and ‘mainstream’ cinema the ‘Chak De’ star says, “There is a never-ending debate that has been happening over this topic for years now. I was born in the 80s which is known as the ‘dark period of Bollywood’. Everybody used to talk about how the Hindi film industry is over. Post 2000, people started to say that a new wave has entered the industry and it is there to stay. I feel it has lot to do with the way our audience is evolving. So is it evolving or is it not evolving is the real question to be asked."
When asked about the recent trend of big actors claiming awards to not be the ultimate parameter of judging, Shilpa answers, “I think awards are very important for content-based small budget movies. It certainly gives them exposure and recognition which is otherwise very hard to come by." Although the actress has doubts over the credibility of commercial awards, she boldly says, “I am amazed that Aamir Khan has never won an award in the recent times only because he doesn’t attend then anymore, that’s unacceptable. I got a Filmfare for ‘B.A Pass and although the feeling is incredible, it is short lived. However, I do believe that they motivate you to do better."
The actress is currently busy shooting Sujoy Ghosh’s film besides managing her theater roles.
