Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently said that he wants to direct a horror movie and has thought about it a lot. He doesn’t just want to scare people but also wants his film to have depth. He shared a story about filming in Madhubala’s old house, which some people believed was haunted by her ghost. Imtiaz shared that he explored the dark corners of the house alone, even though he doesn’t really believe in ghosts. He felt a mix of fear and fascination during those moments. Imtiaz also posted a picture of Madhubala on her birthday.
In an appearance on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Imtiaz said, “Madhubala used to have a house, it was called Kismat Bungalow. It has been reconstructed now. But back in the day, they wouldn’t allow people to film there at night, and people generally wouldn’t want to film there at night because they believed that her ghost haunts the place. Who knows if that was true, but that’s what people believed.” He added, “I shot there quite a bit at night. And I would go to the quietest, darkest corners of that house alone, and I used to wonder if Madhubala’s ghost would come. Although I don’t really believe in spirits, but I remember that feeling. It wasn’t just horror, c else. There was a sense of awe and romanticism. This is an interesting combination.” A couple of years ago, on Madhubala’s 89th birth anniversary, the filmmaker posted a picture of her and wrote that he hopes to see her ghost during his shoots at her old house. The post read, “I have shot nights at her old bungalow hoping for her ghost to show up.”
Madhubala, known for iconic films like Mughal-e-Azam, died at 36 in 1969 after battling illness and experiencing tragic love stories. Imtiaz Ali, director of the praised Netflix film Amar Singh Chamkila, shared that his next project focuses on ‘reminiscence’.
