Suniel Shetty’s Hera Pheri is one of the most iconic comedy franchises in Hindi cinema. Even when Suniel, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal were shooting for the Priyadarshan directorial film, they were confident that it was going to be a hit. Although the film has reached cult status, it took a while for it to pick up at the box office.
Speaking on Bharti TV, Suniel Shetty recalled the film’s opening and said, “The first two shows of Hera Pheri were flat. Zero. It was a disaster. However, when we were shooting it, we were laughing like crazy. Me, Paresh, and Akshay were confident it was a blockbuster during shooting because the film had such great actors – Paresh Ji, Om Puri Ji. Paresh and Akshay’s timing was unbelievable. The film later picked up after 6 pm. The same case was with Border. Sometimes, the films you believe in the most, get a delayed reaction. They used to call Border a documentary, and now it’s one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema.”
Speaking about working with Priyadarshan, he said, “Priyadarshan had writers like Neeraj Vora. His timing was so good, and working with him felt like going back to school for higher studies. He worked in sync with his art director, cameraman, and writers.” Suniel also added that the filmmaker would shoot a single scene for ten days to capture it in the perfect light.
It was earlier reported that Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty and Akshay Kumar will soon reprise their roles for Hera Pheri 3. This third instalment in the beloved Hera Pheri franchise promises to breathe new life into the story, and fans are eagerly waiting to see what fresh twists and turns await them.
During an interview with India Today last year, Paresh Rawal shared, “Agar ye achhi hoti haina [If it turns out to be good], I always have this example of Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The sequel should be like that, radically different. Take a quantum leap and take your character in a different background, a different world. Take the audience also to a different world. That is how it should be. If it comes out like that, fine. But then, let’s see how it works out”
Paresh further spoke about his enduring bond with his co-stars, Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty. He said, “We respect each other a lot as artists, as human beings, and as friends. They are all secure actors. And we know what we have to do.” Meanwhile, fans eagerly await for the film’s shoot to begin.
