The only Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament from Thrissur and Mohanlal’s colleague, Suresh Gopi got a similar call in 2014. Gopi had accepted the invitation and attended the ceremony. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2016. After his term ended last year, the 65-year-old actor got active in politics and was asked to contest from Thrissur. He secured a win in the Lok Sabha polls. PM Modi also made a few visits to Thrissur including solemnising the wedding of his daughter early this year.

Gopi was sworn in as the Minister of State (MoS) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new government. However, he has expressed his desire to step down from the Cabinet. Speaking to Malayalam TV channels in Delhi after the ceremony, Gopi said, “I want to work as an MP. My position was clear from the start; I did not want a Cabinet berth. I informed the party of my lack of interest in the role. I believe I will be relieved soon.” The Play of God actor added that the people of Thrissur are aware that he will excel as a Member of Parliament. According to the veteran actor, his passion for acting remains and he has upcoming film projects as well.

Many prominent celebrities attended the swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister on the lawns of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. They included the actors Anupam Kher, and Anil Kapoor, along with former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Shehla Rashid. Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Rajkumar Hirani and actor Vikrant Massey also attended the ceremony.

Besides these top-notch actors, dignitaries from neighbouring countries and corporate leaders were also present. These included Gautam Adani, his brother Rajesh Adani, Mukesh Ambani, Anant Ambani, and Anand Piramal.
