In 2023, the Bollywood film industry rebounded spectacularly at the box office, breaking free from a streak of failures in preceding years. The turning point was brought by Shah Rukh Khan’s 2023 hit action films Pathaan and Jawan. Both of his movies released this year broke records at the box office and garnered immense acclaim from fans and critics alike. Reflecting on this, filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap commended King Khan’s performance in Pathaan as he reviewed the year 2023. He acknowledged SRK as the driving force behind the industry’s newfound success, attributing him for “breaking the curse” of Bollywood.
During a conversation with Pinkvilla, when asked how 2023 has been a game-changer for Bollywood, Anurag Kashyap responded, “I think kafi achha raha hai (I think it’s been amazing). I think jo sab log Bollywood pe se curse tha uth gaya hai (the curse has been removed from Bollywood) which is very good news because distributors are happy, studios are happy, and everybody is happy.” He also added that their happiness is a positive indicator of the success of his future projects.
“The biggest moment of the year was Pathaan breaking the curse. There was a curse on Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan came and said, ‘Hataao isko (just remove it).’ That was the defining moment (of the year),” the filmmaker emphasised.
Talking about SRK’s movie Pathaan and how well-received it is, Anurag Kashyap told Pinkvilla, “It has not faded.”
Pathaan is an action thriller directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra. It is the fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham, with Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in significant roles. The story revolves around Pathaan, a skilled agent who worked for RAW but chose a different path due to certain reasons. The plot is set when India revoked Article 370 for Jammu & Kashmir. The cast also includes Salman Khan, Viraf Patel, and others. The movie was released on January 25, 2023.
In addition to Pathaan, there were other successful films in the year, such as Jawan, Gadar 2, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, 12th Fail, and the recent release Animal, which is expected to make around Rs 500 crore.
Work-wise, Anurag Kashyap is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie Kennedy, a neo-noir thriller featuring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone. The film received a standing ovation at the Cannes 2023 screening.
On the other hand, Shah Rukh Khan is gearing up for the release of his highly-anticipated movie Dunki, a comedy-drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Besides SRK, the film also features Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal in a special appearance and Boman Irani. The story revolves around donkey flights, an illegal immigration method. It is produced under the Red Chillies Entertainment and Jio Studios banner.
