Aamir Khan’s approach to work has always been a topic of discussion within the film industry. While some look at him as excessively hands-on, others praise his commitment to the art. In a recent interview with Digital Commentary, Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan, who has worked with Aamir Khan on films such as Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Mann, Akele Hum Akele Tum, and Baazi, spoke abuot his experiences working with the superstar. Praising Aamir Khan’s deep engagement with his films, Mushtaq shared an incident when the actor visited his home post-midnight solely to narrate a revised scene.
Talking about Aamir’s work ethic, Mushtaq said, “I have done many films with Aamir Khan. In any film, doesn’t matter who is the director or producer, he is fully involved. The best thing about Aamir Khan is that he wants the film to be good. He wants the scene to be good and he wants that if a scene has four artists they get their moments. For instance, if I have a scene then that will remain my scene. This is a big thing. When it is said that he interferes that’s not true.”
Explaining his point with an example from his personal experience, he said, “For instance, I was doing the film Akele Hum Akele Tum. I played the role of Aamir’s lawyer in the film. So, when I am defending him in a scene, he is sitting there. I made a point while defending him and he didn’t like that point. He told the director Mansoor Khan that he didn’t like that scene. Mansoor ignored him and completed the scene. We backed up at 6 pm. I got a phone call at 8 pm and Aamir was on the line. He asked me, ‘When do you sleep?’ I said, ’11 or 11:30.’ Later that night, he told me that they got the point of that scene and that they were writing it with the writer. I thought, ‘He hasn’t left that point and ye aaj sone nahi dega (he won’t let me sleep).’ I told him we will meet tomorrow but he refused and insisted that we meet at that very moment. I convinced him to send the scene with his driver. My wife told me that nobody will come and just sleep.”
Mushtaq was surprised when, at 12:15 am, Aamir’s driver knocked on his door and said Aamir was waiting downstairs. “He told me Aamir is waiting for me downstairs. Aamir said sorry to me and he read me the scene under the street lamp of my house. Slowly, the people of my colony accumulated on the roof. This is Aamir Khan,” he said.
