The Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested three men from Gujarat’s Vadodara over their alleged involvement in sending a threat mail to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). A preliminary probe revealed that the accused men sent the mail to play mischief.
The crime branch is currently interrogating the accused over the motive behind the threat.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday received a threat mail saying 11 bombs have been planted at 11 locations in Mumbai. The threat comes before the New Year Celebrations in India’s financial capital.
The mailer demanded the resignations of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman alleging that they were involved in the “biggest scam in India’s history”.
An FIR was registered in South Mumbai against an unidentified person, in connection with the case and the crime branch of the Mumbai police was roped in to conduct a probe, an official was quoted by PTI as saying.
Acting on technical inputs, the crime branch team apprehended 27-year-old Mohammed Arshil Mohammed Iqbal Topala from Vadodara, the official added.
The accused, Topala holds a degree in Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and works in share market trading. He had created the email ID to send the threat mail to the central bank, the official said.
The crime branch officials also apprehended 23-year-old Adil Bhai Rafiq Bhai Malik, who works at an egg shop, and 35-year-old Wasimraja Abdulrazzak Memon – both from Vadodara. The other two accused were taken into custody for their suspected role in the case and they are being handed over to the MRA Marg police station for further action.
According to the police, the threat mail was sent from the ID [email protected] on the RBI governor’s email ID at around 10.50 am on Tuesday.
The mail, as seen by CNN-News18, read, “We have planted 11 different bombs in different locations of Mumbai. The RBI along with private sector banks have executed the biggest scam in the history of India. The scam involves RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, some of the top finance officials and some renowned ministers of India. We have sufficient proof for the same.”
As per the threat email, the three locations, where the bomb had been planted were: RBI New Central Office building, Fort; HDFC House, Churchgate; ICICI Bank Towers, BKC.
Following the mail, Mumbai Police went to all these locations and conducted investigations, however, they did not find anything.
The police had also filed an FIR under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 505 (1), 505 (2), and 506 (2) in connection with the case at the MRA Marg police station.
