Opinion | Debunking Misconceptions: Sadhguru’s Approach to Healthcare
Contrary to popular belief, Sadhguru has never been against modern medicine or allopathy. His stance advocates for utilising any system of medicine that proves effective, whether it be allopathy, Ayurveda, or Siddha

In the wake of Sadhguru’s recent health emergency and subsequent surgery, there has been a flurry of debate surrounding his choice to seek modern medical treatment. Some have labelled this decision as hypocritical, citing his advocacy for yoga and traditional medicine. However, such assertions fail to grasp Sadhguru’s holistic perspective on healthcare.

Contrary to popular belief, Sadhguru has never been against modern medicine or allopathy. His stance advocates for utilising any system of medicine that proves effective, whether it be allopathy, Ayurveda, or Siddha. This inclusive approach is underscored by his acknowledgement of the strengths of modern medicine, particularly in emergency situations. In his own words, “If you are really in a state of emergency, going to an Ayurvedic doctor is not the best thing to do. You go to him only when you have time to recover. In an emergency, Allopathy has better systems than any other. But when your problems are mild and you know they are evolving, Ayurveda and other systems are very effective means of treatment.”

The Isha Health Solutions, spearheaded by Sadhguru, exemplifies this integrated approach to healthcare. By combining allopathic methods for treating infectious diseases with indigenous systems aimed at bolstering the body’s natural defences, Isha Arogya offers a comprehensive and accessible healthcare model. Sadhguru emphasises the importance of such integration, stating, “At Isha Health Solutions, Siddhavaidya, Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Yogic systems, Homeopathy, and Allopathy – all six – are practised together at one place.”

Moreover, Sadhguru’s recent interview underscores his belief in a preventive healthcare approach. He clarifies that holistic health practices are intended to prevent illnesses rather than cure them and that modern medicine is more equipped to deal with diseases such as cancer. This philosophy is reflected in the healthcare facilities at the Isha Yoga Centre, where allopathic treatment is prioritised for residents, emphasising the importance of early intervention and prevention.

Beyond the Isha Yoga Centre, the Isha Rural Health Clinics extend quality and affordable healthcare to rural communities. Equipped with diagnostic labs, pharmacies, and minor surgery facilities, these clinics offer both allopathic and alternative medical services. Visiting specialists further enhance the scope of care, ensuring comprehensive healthcare delivery.

In essence, Sadhguru’s approach to healthcare transcends dogma and embraces pragmatism. His advocacy for an inclusive healthcare model, incorporating the strengths of various medical systems, reflects a nuanced understanding of the diverse healthcare needs of individuals and communities. Rather than viewing modern medicine as antithetical to spiritual teachings, Sadhguru underscores its complementary role in promoting holistic well-being.
