The Gujarat High Court on Friday ordered a probe into the custodial death of a member of the Patel community. The deceased, Shwetang Patel, was detained on Tuesday night for his involvement in arson and vandalism.
Post mortem reports have revealed that Shwetang Patel died due to head injuries. The Gujarat government has claimed that Shwetang was part of the mob that resorted to violence on Tuesday night, when community leader Hardik Patel was briefly detained.
Meanwhile, Hardik Patel, the youth who has emerged as the face of the Patidar agitation for reservation, suggested that he would make the stir a nationwide stir. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Hardik said that during his visit to the national capital, he would meet patidars from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh and "decide the future of course of nationwide action". He also said that he would meet leaders of Gurjar and Jat agitations.
Though he approved of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in Gujarat, Hardik said the leaders of the party were "not of his choice".
"The BJP is the party of my choice, but its leaders are not. Anandiben Patel will accept our demands. It may take time, but she will," said Hardik, adding, "Til now, Modi has not done any remarkable work. He will do better, but only with our support."
Addressing a question on his "love for weapons", the young leader said that "one must use them for safeguarding our community. In fact the government must distribute weapons to all".
Hailing the politics of Shiv Sena founder and supremo Bal Thackeray, Hardik said that while the Maharashtra leader was the "Hindu Hriday Samrat", he is the "Patidar Hriday Samrat".
Hardik further asserted that "Patidars can change the results in next elections if the BJP does not concede to the demands".
