She raised her voice against the alleged torture several women were subjected to in Sandeshkhali and today, Rekha Patra is synonymous with the fight for justice in West Bengal.
When Patra’s name appeared in the BJP’s list of candidates from the state for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, she was taken aback. To add to her surprise, she received a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who encouraged her to fight for the state’s women.
Patra, who took a backseat from campaigning after she fell ill, is back in the saddle now. Speaking to CNN-News, she said her victory means a win for the people of Sandeshkhali and her focus will be on women.
Edited Excerpts:
How is life now?
I have to put forward the demands and needs of mothers and sisters of our community. I stood up against the torture in Sandeshkhali and will now fight for my mothers and sisters.
A CBI probe has been ordered in all cases related to Sandeshkhali. What’s your reaction?
This was much needed. We don’t have any confidence in Bengal Police, they have always been on [accused] Shahjahan Sheikh’s side. The CBI probe will help women get justice in Sandeshkhali.
Whom do you credit for this?
I definitely want to thank PM Modi. He has taken the initiative and given us confidence [to fight for justice]. He called me and I was overwhelmed that he stood by us. He has given us strength.
Why will people vote for you?
I represent the women of Sandeshkhali who went through unspeakable torture. When I go to campaign in my neighbourhood, I see they have faith in me. They say I stand for them. The entire BJP family is with me.
Who are you taking training from for your political innings?
It’s the women of Sandeshkhali who train me. I follow Modi-ji. He is my guardian.
How confident are you of a win?
People are confident about me, and hence I feel I have a chance.
