Chennai: In a strange incident on the first day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session, Speaker P Dhanapal praised Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the House.

Giving a speech in the praise of Jayalalithaa, he said, "You have won against conspiracy. You are a great Amma." A Speaker praising the chief minister during AIADMK rule is not uncommon in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Assembly session has begun on Monday and will go on until September 29. Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is back at the helm following her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case and her subsequent victory in the RK Nagar by-polls.

The opening session began with obituary references to former president APJ Abdul Kalam, former minister Senthur Pandian and music composer MS Viswanathan.

The 19-day Assembly session is expected to be a stormy one with opposition parties, including the DMK and the Congress, expected to raise the issue of prohibition in the state, following weeks of protests by several parties demanding a ban on state-run liquor shops. Keeping up pressure on the ruling AIADMK, Congress MLA Vijayadharni will be introducing a private member's bill to discuss the prohibition issue on Tuesday.

Speaking to mediapersons, actor-turned-MLA Sharath Kumar of Samathuva Makkal Katchi said, "TN assembly began today with paying tribute to former President APJ Abdul Kalam. The chief minister wants to act on prohibition. She has already closed 500 shops near highways."
