New Delhi: Former BJP minister Bangaru Laxman was sentenced to four years of jail term by a Delhi court on Saturday and imposed with an additional fine of Rs one lakh, in connection with an arms deal case. Bangaru was convicted for taking a Rs one lakh bribe to push a defence deal in a sting operation 11 years ago.
Who is Bangaru Laxman
- Bangaru Laxman was a minister of state for railways in the Government of India from 1999 to 2000.
- He was involved in a major controversy when a private TV network tehelka.com showed him taking bribes on a hidden camera while he was the president of the BJP.
- The sting sparked a political storm following which Bangaru resigned as BJP chief.
- The corruption charges were framed against Laxman in May 2011 by a Delhi Court.
