Sharma, after graduating from IIT Roorkee, began his career with Indian Railways as a Divisional Mechanical Engineer, a role he held for four years. In 1994, he was promoted to Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer. He left the job after working for a little over 11 years.
In 2002, Sharma pursued further education, enrolling in a one-year MS program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. After completing his degree in 2003, he joined Seagate Technology as a Staff Mechanical Engineer. In 2008, he was promoted to Senior Mechanical Engineer and spent a total of five years with the American data storage company before leaving in 2013.
During his time at Seagate, he also earned an MS in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota in 2008.

He then joined the American space manufacturer SpaceX as a Dynamics Engineer and led the structural dynamics efforts, collaborating closely with teams in aerodynamics, GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control), propulsion, and thermal engineering. He was also involved in the recovery and reusability efforts of the first-stage booster, starting from the Falcon 9 flight F9-005 to F9-0059.
In 2018, he joined Matternet Inc., a leading developer of commercial drone delivery systems. At Matternet, he first led vehicle engineering and then headed the technology division, holding the position for over two years.
Sharma returned to SpaceX in 2022 as a Principal Engineer for Starship Dynamics and is currently based in Hawthorne, California.
Take a look at his LinkedIn profile here:
Sharma, in the About section of LinkedIn, wrote, “Experienced Head Of Engineering with a demonstrated history of working in the aviation and aerospace industry. Strong engineering professional skilled in leading diverse hardware teams, expertise in electro-mechanical systems design in domains as wide as railroads, computer hard disc drives, reusable rockets and unmanned aerial vehicles.
