Receiving a degree during a convocation ceremony is typically a joyous occasion marked by cheers from loved ones. However, a video has gone viral, depicting a young student receiving his college degree from the University of Leicester in the UK. During this moment, he shouts “Jai Siya Ram” from the stage, with some members of the audience echoing the chant. The exact date of the video and the identity of the student remains unclear.
Even as this video raked in over two lakh views and thousands of likes, a few people criticised the young man’s antics by arguing that religious acts should not be promoted in an academic environment.

An X user wrote, “I’m actually not a fan of this. We would have criticised someone badly had they shouted “Allah u Akhbar” or “Waheguru” or something else. Proudly chanting it in a religious setting is acceptable, but not in a Convocation ceremony! I’m a proud Sanatani but I disagree here!”
Another person tagged the University of Leicester and wrote, “How do you allow your students to shout Jai Shri Ram slogan which is equivalent of Allahu Akbar or Hallelujah in a loud tone, a religious extreme show-off? This is absolutely unacceptable & reduces value in an educational institution.”
In June last year, a different video from the convocation ceremony of a foreign university went viral. The video showed a student walking up the stage and yelling “Mummy mai pass ho gaya!”, which translates to, “Mummy, I managed to pass!” The people in the audience laugh and cheer the student who then proceeds to accept his degree certificate.
