Veteran BJP leader Ramesh Bais, BJP state chief Vishnudeo Sai and senior Congressman Satyanarayan Sharma were among 15 candidates who filed their nominations on Tuesday for seven parliamentary constituencies from Chhattisgarh which go to the polls on April 24.

"Fifteen candidates have filed their nomination papers for the seven Lok Sabha seats of Surguja (2), Raigarh (2), Janjgir-Champa (1), Korba (1), Bilaspur (1), Durg (1) and Raipur (7) which go to polls during the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in Chhattisgarh," an election official said.

Raipur's sitting MP Ramesh Bais filed his nomination from where Congress candidate MLA Satynarayan Sharma also filed his nomination papers on Tuesday.

Main opposition Congress nominated Sharma from Raipur after making changes four times, where six-time MP Bais, who belongs to the Kurmi community, has a strong base.

BJP state unit chief and sitting MP Vishnudeo Sai filed his nomination from the Raigarh seat while Congress candidate from this seat Aarti Singh Thakur also filed her nomination papers.

BJP candidates Banshilal Mahto (Korba seat) and Kamla Devi Patle (Janjgir-Champa) also filed their nomination, the official said.

Candidates can file nomination for the third phase of Lok Sabha polls in Chhattisgarh until April 5.

Scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on April 7, while candidates can withdraw their names from the fray until April 9, the official said.

A total of 15.10 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the Sarguja Lok Sabha constituency, while in Raigarh, there are 16.13 lakh voters to decide the fate of candidates, he said.

Chhattisgarh goes to polls in three phases -- on April 10, April 17 and April 24 for its 11 Lok Sabha seats.

The Maoist-hit Bastar (ST) constituency will witness polling on April 10, while Maoist-affected constituencies like Mahasamund (Gen), Kanker (ST) and Rajnandgaon (Gen) will go to polls on April 17.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, ten seats were won by BJP, while Congress had managed to win only one.

This time, the key contest would once again be between the ruling BJP and Congress.
