Opposition BJP on Monday demanded that Bihar government double the salary of primary, middle and higher schools contractual teachers.  Speaking to reporters senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi also demanded that the government clear the arrears of non financial educational institutions pending for the past four years.

Modi said it was ironical that a class four employee in the government whose minimum qualification is matriculation is drawing Rs 14,500 salary per month, whereas teachers tasked with creating future generations is paid far less than them.

Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Jharkhand have raised salaries of such teachers and Bihar government should follow suit, he said.  He claimed that when in the government BJP had always advocated hiking salaries of contractual teachers.

Nearly 2.25 lakh contractual teachers recruited at panchayat and block levels are being paid Rs 7000 for primary level, Rs 8000 for secondary and Rs 9000 for higher level schools.

They have on several occasions protested against state government in support of their demand for regularisation of job and pay parity with them. During one such agitation in Khagaria the protesting teachers had even shown sandals to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last year.
