CHENNAI: A special counselling for engineering aspirants, who passed the 12th Standard Board examination in the second attempt after failing in not more than three papers, will be held on August 12, according to Anna University Vice-Chancellor Mannar Jawahar. More than 2,000 students who took the second attempt examination had applied for the counselling.Recently, the re-examination dates were advanced so that the students in that category could enjoy join engineering courses in the same academic year. With more than 40,000 engineering seats going vacant this academic year, authorities opined that recounselling students could get them a seat in a better college compared to the previous year. “Counselling for students of Class XII from vocational streams will be held on August 16 and 17,” said Mannar Jawahar. “More than 42,000 engineering seats are expected to go vacant this year due to establishment of many more new colleges,” the vice-chancellor said. “While the number of seats has been increased, the quality of education in many of these colleges are yet to be improved,” he said.Speaking on the recently-launched anti-ragging squad, Jawahar said that the squad was on active patrol. However, no case of ragging had been reported. “Anna University has already become a ragging-free campus,” he said.
