Dalai Lama 'shocked' by London riots
Violence erupted in London following the killing of 29-year-old Mark Duggan in police firing.

New Delhi: The Dalai Lama on Wednesday said he was "shocked" and saddened by the riots in London and other parts of Britain.

"I felt shocked. I consider England quite matured and peace loving society," the Tibetan spiritual leader said while addressing the fourth annual lecture of National Commission for Minorities here.

He suggested that the British government should find out reasons for the violence there and prepare a long term strategy to counter such problems.

"If such things happen in Bangladesh or Karachi, I say it is quite understandable but in England?," the Dalai Lama said.

Violence erupted in London following the killing of 29-year-old Mark Duggan in police firing last week and the copycat riots have spread to central and northern cities, where hooded youths ransacked stores and torched cars.
