The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the prestigious project mooted by the Greater Cochin Development Authority to launch a cable car service at Marine Drive will be prepared soon.
The representatives of the UK-based Breco Ropeways Ltd, the company which has expertise in the field of aerial rope ways, had recently visited the site and informed GCDA authorities that a feasibility study and project report will be prepared by them if they were provided with the consent letter for the study.
As per initial assessment, the company is expecting a cost of more than `15 crore for the completion of the cable car service. The service will cover an total area of 1.5 km and 20 cable cars are required to conduct services to and fro.
“We will take a final decision on the cable car service at the next GCDA executive meeting. Once the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed, the company will start the preliminary work. However, GCDA is likely to hold a 25 per cent stake in the whole project which will be totally operated by the private player,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal.
The cable car project is being launched as part of the ‘Vision 2030 Plan’ proposed by GCDA. If implemented, it will be for the first time that such a facility is being set up in the state.
The GCDA has also mooted long-term plans by extending the service to Varapuzha and nearby areas in the future.
Dolphin Park
An expert team from a foreign company will visit the proposed dolphin park site at the Marine Drive on October 18. “The dolphinarium will be set up in the backwaters between the Cheenavala Bridge and Rainbow bridge at Marine Drive. The team of experts include the general manager and technical manager of the company has shown its interest in the project,” Venugopal added.
The proposed projects, including the cable car service and dolphin park are expected to boost the tourism scope of Marine Drive, which is one of the major attractions of the city, he said.
