Facebook shuts down its @facebook.com email service
Facebook is retiring its email service "because most people haven't been using their Facebook email address."

New Delhi: A little over three years ago, Facebook attempted to take on Google's Gmail with Facebook Messages, that came with an @facebook.com email address. Now the world's largest social networking site is quietly retiring the service that not too many people were using anyway.

Facebook is shutting down its email service "because most people haven't been using their Facebook email address," and Facebook says the company would rather focus on improving mobile messaging experience for everyone.

Facebook recently acquired WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion.

This means that any emails sent to your @facebook.com email ID would automatically be redirected to the email you used to sigh up for Facebook. But if you turn off the auto-forwarding option, emails would be bounced back.

Facebook had attempted to make its email service work and in June 2012 it sparked an outcry when it replaced the email address users chose when they signed up and changed it to a facebook.com address.

This means that any current Facebook conversations that include an email address will become read-only. While you will still be able to view the conversation, but you'll no longer be able to reply to it from your Facebook Messages.

Facebook is now displaying the following message to users announcing the change:

"******, we want to let you know about an upcoming change to your Facebook email address: *@facebook.com.

When someone sends you an email at that address, it will no longer go to your Messages on Facebook. Instead, the email will be forwarded to the primary email address on your account: *@gmail.com

We're making this change because most people haven't been using their Facebook email addresses, and we wanted to make it easier to view all your emails in one place. Plus, we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone."

What's your reaction?
