Kabini discharge back to 9000 Cusecs

Irrigation officials, who had reduced the outflow from Kabini reservoir to 5,500 cusecs on Wednesday following a protest by farmers, restored the discharge to 9,000 cusecs on Thursday. Another 2,300 cusecs of water was released to irrigation canals. The authorities adhered to government’s instruction to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Police security around the reservoir has been increased to stop farmers from staging protests there or taking control of sluice gates.

The inflow to the reservoir came down to 8,130 cusecs from 13,788 cusecs on Tuesday, and it is expected to further reduce by Friday as there are no rains in the Wayand region of Kerala.

The water level at Kabini reservoir stood at 2,283 ft as against the maximum of 2,284 ft. On Tuesday, the level was 2,281.70 ft.

The opening of both the sluice gates to release water till Wednesday, will lead to a fall in water level by three feet. The authorities had no option but to restore discharge to Tamil Nadu after the farmers left the dam site on Wednesday night.

However, this has enraged farmers of the region and has forced them to come in big numbers to stop release of water in next two days. Farmers in the region said as monsoon was coming to an end the state could not anticipate good rains or increased inflow to the reservoirs.

In KRS reservoir, the irrigation officials on Thursday maintained the discharge level of 5,300 cusecs to irrigation canals.
