Spurt in J&K infiltration before winter
There has been a sudden increase in infiltration-attempts in J&K in the run-up to the approaching winter.

Srinagar: There has been a sudden increase in infiltration-attempts in Jammu and Kashmir in the run-up to the approaching winter when border-crossing becomes nearly impossible, Indian Army said on Monday.

However, all attempts were foiled by troops guarding the line of control (LoC), reducing the risk of terror-attacks in the Kashmir valley, an Army spokesperson said.

Recently a group of five heavily-armed militants of foreign origin, who attempted to cross the LoC through Machal sector of Kupwara district, were killed.

While four were killed on October 18 the fifth was killed two days later, the spokesperson said.

In another such incident, one local militant and two foreigners were killed in the Uri sector on October 21.

Similar operations were continuing against infiltrators in the Gurez sector of Baramulla district, where militants had crossed the border on October 20, taking advantage of area's zero-visibility resulting from heavy snowfall and low clouds.

Two of them had been killed the same day while others were being tracked, he said.

A huge cache of arms including 10 AK rifles, two pistols, two ground positioning system, four radio sets, a mobile, three wire cutters, Rs 1,550 Pakistani currency, Rs 5,000 Indian currency, food and medicine packets with Pakistan markings were recovered from the killed militants, he said.
