In the vibrant tapestry of India’s diverse traditions, South India stands out for its unique fusion of folk art and festivals. Amid the dynamic landscape changes in states like Telangana, there remains a steadfast commitment to preserving cultural heritage. A testament to this commitment is the enduring presence of Jada Koppu Kolatam, a rare folk art form celebrated during the Dussehra and Diwali festivals in Telangana’s Adilabad district.

Jada Koppu Kolatam is an attractive spectacle, where artists wield wooden percussion instruments in one hand and gracefully hold a saree in the other, intricately tied to a ceiling pole. Adorned with anklets, the artists engage in a mesmerising circular dance, harmonising their rhythms and voices with traditional songs. The sarees are deftly woven into a ‘Jada,’ or a braid, adding visual allure to the performance.

This unique art form holds profound significance in rural areas, serving as both entertainment and a sacred tradition during festive occasions. Villagers perceive it as a traditional game, firmly believing that its practitioners invite prosperity and happiness into their homes. Farmers actively participate, seeking blessings for abundance in their fields and villages.

The game spans five days, marked by fasting as well as joyous celebrations. Immersed in the rhythmic melodies, participants and spectators alike become engrossed in the tales of Radha and Krishna’s love and the playful antics of Lord Krishna. The timeless allure of Jada Koppu Kolatam transcends mere entertainment, creating a cultural tapestry that binds communities together.
