Time and again, passengers complain about broken seats on public transport to raise concerns over railway services and especially the quality of meals served. While the authorities are on their toes to address such complaints, a share of responsibility lies on the citizens as well to take care of public property. Recently, a railway official resorted to social media to express his displeasure with a passenger’s misuse of railway property. Ananth Rupanagudi took to his X handle to respond to a photo of a passenger sleeping with his feet put up to the snack tray on the Vande Bharat Express.
An X user with the username Namma Kovai shared a picture of a passenger sleeping with his bare feet on the tray that is generally used for keeping the refreshments served on the train and questioned the absence of fundamental travel etiquette among people. He wrote, “Chennai Vande Bharat. Such actions are not only disrespectful but also set a negative example for the wider community. Placing one’s feet on surfaces designated for dining is unsanitary and exhibits a lack of basic etiquette.” The viral picture seems to be a screenshot taken from the link to a YouTube video.

Soon after the picture was posted, the railway official, Ananth Rupanagudi took notice of the same and urged people to travel more responsibly. He expressed, “Please use the fittings for the purpose they are meant for. They have been created for you with your money and hence you have a responsibility towards those fittings. And these trains are built at a considerable cost. Please travel responsibly.”

Many online users also expressed their frustration over such behavior. One user said, “Can’t agree more. We will be placed lowest if civic behaviour is ranked worldwide,” while another asserted, “Civic sense is absent from the brains of our society. Pointing out such incidents makes us villains.”
A social media user pointed out, “It will get damaged sooner handling that much weight. People like these must be fined.”

This is not the first time, the railway official pointed out how passengers misuse services inside the train.
One of the main reasons for breaking of snack trays or defective snack trays in #VandeBharat and other trains! Even with photographic evidence, whiners would say that I pass on the blame only to passengers! #IndianRailways #Responsibility #passengers pic.twitter.com/ykv0VNED9a— Ananth Rupanagudi (@Ananth_IRAS) November 22, 2023
He shared a picture of two kids sitting on a snack tray in the Vande Bharat Express train while their parents could be seen sitting in front of them on the seats. He stated that this was one of the reasons why the tray breaks easily.
